Rigging for Modelling in Modo

Take your modelling further

Rigging is not just for animation, it can also enhance your modelling work by allowing you to manipulate your geometry in a controllable way. A rigged model is just so much more versatile: you can operate mechanical elements just like their real-world counterparts, and reveal parts of the model that might otherwise be hidden.

For instance if you’ve modelled a vintage bellows camera like the one in the example image, why limit yourself to a static model? Your renders will be so much more interesting if you can operate the bellows so that you can show the mechanism either in its closed position or its open one, or anything in between.

And this is why I created this rigging course for modellers. Using practical real-world examples I will show you how to rig mechanical models so that they can be operated, and thus allow you to render them in a variety of different states.

There are three step-by-step section in the training, starting with an articulated truck, followed by a parasol mechanism, and finally a bellows camera. Being able to operate these mechanisms allows for a much wider range of possibilities compared to their static counterparts. A model isn’t really complete if it can’t be manipulated into different positions.

Rigging is a hugely valuable skill for modellers. It will allow you to breathe life into your static creations, making them more dynamic and engaging. Whether you're creating product visualizations, architectural models, or vehicles, understanding how to rig your models can open up a whole new world of possibilities for your renders.

Rigging will take your modelling skills to the next level, providing you with the tools and techniques to create more interactive and versatile 3D models. By learning how to rig your models, you'll be able to showcase your work in ways that were previously impossible, adding an extra layer of realism and functionality to your creations. Whether you're a beginner looking to expand your skillset or an experienced modeller wanting to add more depth to your work, this course will equip you with valuable knowledge to enhance your 3D modelling abilities.

This course is accessible to modellers at all levels, from beginners to advanced users. By focusing on practical, real-world examples, you'll gain hands-on experience that you can immediately apply to your own projects. Whether you're looking to enhance your images, improve your skills, or simply explore new creative possibilities, learning to rig your models will be a very worthwhile investment in your skillset.
