Blender Shading Fundamentals - The Essential Guide
Once you understand the why, the how becomes easy
When I first learned shading in Blender, I did what everyone else does: I followed some videos on YouTube, and by sticking to the steps that were shown I was able to create some reasonably good materials. But the trouble with following simple step-by-step training is that you miss out on the why, even if the how gets you results quickly.
Taking a step back though, I now realise I would have made faster progress with some training that really taught the fundamentals. How the nodes in the Shader Editor work, and why they should be connected in a specific order. That overarching knowledge makes you more efficient - and far more effective at solving problems.
So it was with that in mind that I set about creating this training, the kind of training that would have really benefited me when I was starting out with Blender. This training will teach you the fundamentals first, and then guide you step-by-step through a complete project, so that you really understand what is happening, rather than just blindly following a boil-in-the-bag recipe.
The first five modules of the course will teach you the foundation. The following nine videos will then guide you through a complete project using the techniques outlined in the foundational sections. The course covers everything from texture mapping to procedural texturing, UV maps, and an in-depth look at nodes, culminating in the application of all this knowledge in a real project.
After watching this training you will be able to tackle almost any shading challenge in Blender with confidence. My approach has always been to teach from the ground up, so that you come away with a deeper understanding of the subject - this training is no exception.
So if you’ve put off truly getting to grips with a thorough understanding of shading in Blender, this video will fix that, making it simple and accessible. It’s not hard, and it might even be fun.
So what exactly will you learn in this training?
The basics: how to apply materials and textures
UV mapping
Object mapping, Triplanar mapping, and projection mapping (for labels and decals)
Node fundamentals
Node Wrangler in depth
Procedural shading
Anisotropic shading
Translucent materials
Adding wear and damage
Lighting and rendering
