Blender for Modo Artists - The Essential Survival Guide

The pain-free way to learn Blender

Learning a new 3D package is a daunting task, and inevitably can become very frustrating as all your once-familiar workflows are thrown by the wayside and you feel forced to adopt strange and unfamiliar methods. If this sounds like you, this training is here to save you from pulling your hair out.

Many of the familiar approaches you are used to in Modo can in fact be used in Blender, so let me show you exactly how. The problem with most other Blender tutorials is simply that their creators have probably never used Modo, and so are not familiar with all the tools and workflows that make Modo great. From Falloffs to Action Centres, Modo pioneered some unique workflows that make modelling much easier and more enjoyable. Watching generic Blender tutorials is frustrating as result, simply because they don’t use the types of workflows you are used to as a Modo artist. But as a Modo artist myself, I can show you how to use Modo-like methods in Blender, and make the transition from one package to another much smoother.

In this extensive introduction to Blender aimed specifically at Modo artists, you will learn how to use Blender’s equivalent to workplanes, action centres, falloffs, and replicators (among many other things). There will also be videos covering specific tools, such as the bevel and knife tools, and how to use them in Blender in ways that are familiar to you as a Modo artist.

Following along with this training will gently ease you in to the world of Blender, and by the end of the 22 videos included in the course you will be ready to tackle almost any challenge in Blender with confidence. The course is designed to address the problems you are likely to encounter as a Modo artist, and reduce the frustration and the “wtf” moments to a minimum, because I have researched the best workflows and approaches that make working in Blender as similar to Modo as possible.

The training takes a practical approach, with each concept demonstrated in a way that will immediately be familiar to Modo users. Every workflow and technique has been carefully chosen to bridge the gap between the two applications, making the transition as intuitive as possible.

One thing this training does not encourage is extensive customisation of the Blender UI to make it more Modo-like. For the most part I will be showing you how to use Blender straight out of the box, with some minimal customisation just to make life easier. Working with all the default shortcuts and only a handful of internally available add-ons means that you will also be able to follow along with other tutorials without needing to adapt.

I think you will be surprised at how far Blender has come, and you will grow to like it if you follow the workflows I describe. It’s just as powerful as Modo for the most part, with a few inevitable differences.

The training comprises of 22 videos in total, with a total runtime of over 3 hours. There are 19 workflow-specific videos that will walk you through everything from bevels, action centres, workplanes, selections, constraints, deformers, snapping, slicing, extruding, falloffs, booleans, duplication, arrays, replicators, backdrops, pie menus, and modifiers, as well as one longer step-by-step video in which I walk you through the modelling of the speaker in the poster image using subdivision surface modelling, with two more videos taking the project to completion with shading, texturing, rendering, and compositing.

This course is a comprehensive introduction to Blender that will answer most of the questions that you as a Modo artist are likely to have, and will allow you to transition to Blender painlessly if that is something you are looking to do.
